Literacy learning
Of paramount importance is the teaching of literacy. To be literate is to have mastery over a range of practices in the written and spoken form and to have flexibility in adapting to new technologies. The teaching of literacy at Mudgeeraba State School includes the traditional ‘basics' of reading, writing, handwriting and spelling.

All students are engaged in literacy learning activities. Teachers plan learning experiences that connect with existing knowledge and skills and promote a depth of understanding. Literacy learning is designed to be purposeful and relevant, and stimulates inquiry, action, reflection and enjoyment.
Numeracy learning
Numeracy is also a priority learning area in our class programs. Being numerate is about competency with numbers and of importance, the ability to use mathematical skills to understand the practical mathematical demands of everyday life.
In addition to teaching basic arithmetic skills, our programs provide students with opportunities to learn mental maths strategies, engage in mathematical investigations and problem solving and critically reflect on their learning.
